Western Sydney University’s NICM Health Research Institute (NICM HRI) is Australia’s leader in integrative and complementary medicine research. Seed funded by the Commonwealth Government and NSW Government, NICM HRI plays a key national role in ensuring Australians have access to reliable evidence on complementary medicines and treatments in wide use. NICM HRI is Australia’s most awarded Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 5 rated institute in the field of complementary medicine research, rated for three consecutive trienniums, 2012, 2015 and 2018. This represents research rated as ‘well above world standards’.

NICM HRI offers a full range of commercial and clinical trial services for complementary medicines including:

Consulting - Product development for new and existing TGA products, ingredient reviews and level of registration advice.

Regulatory - Evidence packages and reviews for therapeutic indications/claims and as part of regulatory submissions.

Authentication of botanical identity of herbs - Assay of active - Herbals, Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients - Finished product analytical method development and validation - Extraction, isolation and quantification of herbal biomarkers - Stability protocol development & testing - Pre-formulation studies, excipient compatibility, physicochemical/chemical purity - Formulation studies, dosage form design - Preclinical Biological Testing Services - Bioassay guided fractionation - Cell based antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, vascular health, neuronal and antimicrobial assays - Molecular targets studies underlying clinical effects of herbal medicines - Herbal synergy and combination optimisation - In-vitro and in-vivo toxicity testing - Licensed for medicinal cannabis and hemp testing.

Clinical studies
Pharmacokinetic studies and bioavailability of herbal medicine - Herb-drug interaction studies –Human clinical trials - CRO services - Protocol development and trial design, ICH compliant, phase II and phase III) - Cardiovascular and neurological function testing using technologies such as vascular ultrasound, central arterial pressure waveform analysis, electrocardiography (ECG), and electroencephalography (EEG) - Neurocognitive function testing including comprehensive neuropsychological batteries administered by trained psychologists and computerised cognitive testing.
