Complementary Medicines Australia (CMA) is pleased to invite you to join the Australian Pavilion at Healthplex 2020. In 2018, CMA successfully organised and hosted the inaugural Australian pavilion at Healthplex – the most popularly-attended nutraceuticals and health food event in Asia Pacific, with the assistance of Austrade and the Healthplex organiser, CCCMHPIE (China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Medicines & Health Products).  The following year, the Australian Pavilion was the largest and most successful international pavilion at the expo, with 18 leading Australian complementary medicines brands and over 100 delegates attending, which was again, invaluably supported by Austrade.


Healthplex is a three-day expo in Shanghai, organised by the CCCMHPIE and Shanghai UMB Sinoexpo International Exhibition Co., Ltd.  Its purpose is to showcase cutting edge, high-quality nutraceutical products to stakeholders and discerning consumers in China. The Expo also provides a perfect environment to learn the latest about Chinese government nutraceutical and health regulations, cross-border e-commerce, social media channels such as WeChat, consumer trends, and the market environment in China.


This annual event is particularly significant for the Australian complementary medicines industry as since 2018, we have officially been the number one Importer into China of Nutrition and Health Food products, with an import volume of AU $1.12 billion (US $730 Million) in 2019. Also, in 2018 Australia’s year on year growth for imports into China of Nutrition and Health Food was an incredible 60.8%, an achievement that is testament to the strong relationships that our industry has fostered with Chinese stakeholders through events like this. Additionally, the China/Hong Kong market is currently the industry’s biggest export market, accounting for 71.5% of Australia’s complementary medicines exports.


A number of Australian firms have been successful at exporting to China, and our industry is cognisant of the importance of greater engagement between CMA and our Chinese counterparts, plus researchers and regulators, to ensure the best health outcomes for consumers in both countries.


With whole-of-industry support, CMA intends to grow the Australian Pavilion at Healthplex each year and this event has become one of the annual highlights for the Australian

complementary medicines industry. This expo provides an ideal opportunity to continue the dialogue, share the latest information, and showcase the latest innovative products to Chinese stakeholders.

CMA is very pleased to announce that we are partnering with Austrade and the ‘Made in Australia Campaign’ to highlight “Brand Australia”, ensuring the Australian pavilion will be the busiest and most successful pavilion at HNC this year and strengthening and enhancing Australia’s global reputation.


The Australian Made (‘AMAG’) logo, together with Australia’s new Nation Brand,

will appear as an event partner across key marketing before, during and after the event, and appear on the Australian pavilion design.


Complementary medicines produced in Australia are highly sought after in China because they are recognised for meeting the highest global standards of quality and safety. The AMAG logo has contributed to the Australian complementary medicines’ exporting success story; international consumers, particularly Chinese consumers, recognise the logo as a symbol of premium-quality Australian goods. Consumers can be confident that complementary medicines using the AMAG logo are manufactured in Australia to the highest quality standards. 


This position has been further strengthened by the Government which recently enshrined into legislation new protections for the complementary medicine industry. The Competition and Consumer Amendment (Australian made Complementary Medicines) Regulations 2019 (‘the Regulation’) will ensure access to Australian origin claims and continued eligibility to seek the Australian Made logo for all complementary medicines meeting the newly legislated requirements.


Despite significant survival challenges in the globally competitive economy, our industry is able to take advantage of access to overseas markets, including China, by utilising the logo as a universal, high-recognition and high-reputation, point of difference to competing products.


Whilst our industry faces competition from other ‘clean and green’ countries for business in China, Australian complementary medicines are well placed to continue to be popular and highly regarded. China’s demand for health products is expected to grow significantly over the next decade, driven by the needs of an ageing population and growing middle class.  With the support of the AMAG logo, Australian complementary medicines manufacturers can expect strong export growth into the future.

Therapeutic Goods New Advertising Code & Complaints System Seminar

This event is a duplicate of the advertising seminars run by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), Complementary Medicines Australia (CMA)in November 2018. 
Due to popular demand we are running a final workshop on the 1st of May at Rydges North Sydney.

The advertising system for therapeutic goods in Australia has just undergone major reforms. These seminars cover the details of the reforms and offer the opportunity for discussion of the new framework with advertisers, to help them understand and apply the obligations when undertaking commercial advertising activities.

The seminar program will include the following topics with a particular focus on the advertising of complementary medicines:

  • An overview of the regulation of advertising for therapeutic goods
  • The new 2018 Advertising Code
  • The new Advertising Complaints Framework
  • Responding to Complaints and Advertising Concerns in the new Framework
