There appears to be widespread and ongoing confusion amongst industry as to which specific coded indications are considered by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to be restricted representations requiring gazettal prior to being advertised to consumers.

The CHC was recently made aware of the TGA clarifying its position on the use of the term ‘arthritis’ in advertising. The CHC maintains that this issue be addressed as part of the permitted indications project and labelling reforms, however in the meantime advertising of these indications needs to be clarified.

High compliance rates for imported foods:
Results of tests applied to food imported to Australia show a consistently high rate of compliance with
Australia's strict food standards. However, the latest report shows food labelling accounted for most
instances of non-compliance with Australia's imported food requirements.

The changes are being made to align with the operation of the Therapeutic Goods legislation, in particular the operation of the Therapeutic Goods (Groups) Order No. 1 of 2001 and are expected to be made available in the ELF by the 6 January 2014.

Over a number of years the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and the complementary medicines
industry have recognised difficulties in appropriately quantifying the activity of enzymes used as active
ingredients in listed medicines. One difficult aspect has been in establishing an appropriate unit for the
enzyme activity of the improved ingredient ‘bromelains’ (Australian Approved Name).
As such the CHC seeks industry feedback on the attached proposal to assist in the resolution of this issue.

Please provide any comments to the CHC by COB Thursday, 24 October.

As sponsors would be aware, when applying to list a new medicine on the Australian Register of
Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) via the listed medicines online portal (ELF), “Product Name” is one of
the mandatory data entry fields. The current maximum length of this field is 300 characters.

The TGA have identified that a very small number of medicines listed on the ARTG have additional
information entered into the Product Name field. This information is entered by the sponsor
when listing a medicine and may include the ingredients, dosage and formulation. There are other
data fields within ELF to appropriately record these medicine properties.
